Project Goals & Benefits

Project Goals:

• Stop the state-proposed timber sale and leave this rare forest land in its natural state.
• Integrate the forest as a natural history classroom for the residents of the Commonwealth.
• Raise funds for a nature center within the park for ongoing studies of this natural wonder.

Project Benefits:

• Preservation of this mature woodland as a future old growth site will offer Massachusetts residents a glimpse into the their state's past as pre-settlement forest.
• Having this forest in its natural state will provide an invaluable sanctuary for our unique, indigenous, and in some cases, endangered wildlife.
• Forest trees are essential to prevent land erosion and to protect the watershed of the Westfield and the Connecticut Rivers from pollution and floods.
